Is lip threading the new best way to get bigger, fuller lips?

Thick, full lips are in, and there’s no sign of them leaving. There are tons of ways to get fuller lips, including lip fillers and surgery. But today, we’re talking about a new trend: lip threading.

What is lip threading? And is it worth getting? In this article, we answer all these questions and more, so keep reading.

What is lip threading?

Lip threading is an up-and-coming trend that could replace lip fillers in the near future. The procedure works best for people who want to have fuller-looking lips but don’t want the change to be too obvious.

But how is it done?

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved procedure involves the insertion of a thread into the line of your lips.

Plastic surgeons use a thin tube to place the thread on one-half of the lips. That means if you want both your upper and lower lips threaded, you’ll need at least four threads total. The thread is then snipped with surgical scissors, so it’s not visible.

“These threads are composed of poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA, a biocompatible synthetic substance,” Dr. Tijion Esho of ESHO Clinic explained to Refinery29.

However, it’s not the threads themselves that make the lips look fuller.

“[The threads] are placed into the lip to stimulate collagen production and therefore change both the shape and size of the lip. The collagen stimulation is modest, so there is a more noticed change in definition than [the] volume of the lip itself.”

Speaking with Coveteur, Dr. Melissa Doft said, “Because it’s a foreign material, it stimulates your body to react and form more collagen in that area. It’s really your body reacting to the threads more than the volume of the actual thread.”

How does lip threading differ from lip fillers?

For lip fillers, cosmetic surgeons inject your lips with “fillers.” Often, these fillers are hyaluronic- or collagen-based. They work by plumping up the lips and by trapping water within the lips.

Lip fillers are ideal for those looking for a well-defined, plump pout. Lip threads, on the other hand, are great for people who just want more defined or slightly fuller lips.

Is this a one-time procedure?

The thread inside the lips break down naturally over time, so if you want to re-plump your lips, you’ll likely have to go in for another procedure.

The good news is that it takes the body a much longer time to break down lip threads than they do lip fillers. Of course, there’s also a downside to that.

“This can be seen as a positive by someone who wants a longer-lasting result,” Dr. Jonquille Chantrey of One Aesthetic Studio told Refinery29.

“However, if you have a side effect such as an infection or a distortion, or you just don’t like the result, you can’t easily get them out.”

Is lip threading safe?

Like all cosmetic procedures, lip threading is not 100% safe, especially if not done at the hands of professionals.

“This is a medical procedure and all medical procedures will carry risk, but within the correct, experienced medical professional’s hands, this can be a safe procedure,” said Dr. Esho.

“If placed poorly then lip threads can cause lumps and other issues,” Dr. Chantrey adds. “I have seen reasonable results but also poor results, particularly with uneven lips.”

As always, if you are interested in getting a cosmetic procedure, seek out a licensed professional.

Does lip threading hurt?

Lip threading is said to involve a sharp pinch when the thread is first inserted, and then discomfort as the rest of the procedure takes place.

Anesthetics are not an option, as they may deter the procedure. According to Dr. Chantrey, anesthetics might affect how your lips look when you are smiling or relaxed, so it could potentially disrupt an accurate lip assessment.
